The director of the maximum-security laboratory in Wuhan City, China responded to rumors circulating that the Corona virus might originate from the lab. He strongly denied the rumor.
During this time Chinese scientists stated that the Corona virus probably originated from bats in the wild animal market in Wuhan. However, the existence of the Wuhan Virology Institute with maximum safety biology safety laboratory in Wuhan, triggers the conspiracy theory that the Corona virus may have been synthesized artificially in the lab or leaked from one of its laboratories, specifically its P4 laboratory which is equipped to handle dangerous viruses.
In an interview with Chinese state media, CGTN, Yuan Zhiming, the lab's director said as reported by the AFP news agency on Monday (4/20/2020), that "it is impossible for this virus to come from us."
He said, no staff were infected with the virus.
Earlier in February, the institute has denied rumors that the Corona virus that is currently endemic came from a lab in Wuhan, a city in China, where the COVID-19 pandemic began.
But this week, rumors re-surfaced after US President Donald Trump said that his administration was investigating whether the Corona virus really originated from the lab in Wuhan.
When asked if the deadly virus could originate from the lab, Yuan replied: "I know that's impossible."
"As people who study viruses, we clearly know what kind of research is happening at this institute and how the institute manages viruses and samples," he said.
Previously, media outlets such as the Washington Post and Fox News quoted sources as saying that the Corona virus might have leaked from the Wuhan lab.
Yuan stressed that the news was "based entirely on speculation without evidence or knowledge".
The French government has also confirmed that so far there is no link between the Corona virus and the Wuhan lab. The Wuhan Lab was established after in 2004, the French government signed an agreement with China to establish an infectious disease research laboratory with biological safety level 4, the highest level in Wuhan. This information is based on a French decree signed by the then French foreign minister, Michel Barnier.
